The TLAN is a Private Network based on layer 2 Virtual LAN (VLAN) technology. The logic-based VLAN technology is secure and reliable, and allows IP layer independence for customers. Dodo’s IP VPN solution is state-of-the art in IP Virtual Private Networking (VPN) which utilises MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching) technology in the core infrastructure. MPLS enables Irwin Consult to fully optimise application delivery across the corporate IP WAN using different Application Classes of Service.
MPLS provides the same degree of privacy and security as a Layer 2 Frame Relay or ATM transport service without having the same scaling problems and with lower cost structure.
MPLS provides a new mechanism for creating Private Networks. The network labels packets as they enter the network to identify which private network they belong to. The network distributes routing information about each private network so that logically there is a separate routing infrastructure for each one. This solution eliminates the scaling problems associated with tunneling and Layer 2 solutions.
MPLS is technology that combines the benefits of layer 3 routing and layer 2 switching to enable high performance IP networks. Using MPLS, IP packets are prefixed with a label (a short, fixed-length tag, also known as an MPLS shim) as they enter our MPLS network and then are switched from node to node based on the label. At the exit point of the MPLS network, the label is removed and forwarded to the destination as a normal IP packet.

Compared to a traditional IP network, whereby each packet’s header needs to be examined at each hop along the way, MPLS provides increased efficiency and speed of data throughput by optimising the packet-processing overhead in the network.
Using MPLS/Private Network technology, the IP VPN network provides an advanced peer-to-peer Private Network offering. The peer-to-peer model allows a customer’s private network traffic to be routed across the optimum path within the Dodo MPLS network, rather than traversing a fixed path of virtual circuits (which is typical of Frame Relay and ATM networks).
This feature is especially important for real-time applications (such as voice) whereby eliminating unnecessary hops, decreases delay and jitter in packet transmission.

Dodo established and assigned Route Distinguishers, or VPN identifiers, are unique to each customer. This identifier is associated with each port into the network and provides the same level of security as Frame Relay. No other connection on the network can transmit this identifier in an attempt to spoof the routers, as the transmission will be denied.
IP VPN is a private IP Infrastructure and not connected to the public Internet and as such, eliminates security breaches originating from outside the Customers organisation.
